Our Students Know More Than We Think and Think More Than We Know: Eliciting and Developing All Students’ Mathematical Potential

March 21, 2019 @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm PDT

This event is an opportunity for educators and anyone interested in mathematics education to learn about efforts by local teachers to elicit and advance students’ mathematical potential. Mathematics teaching and learning has traditionally over-emphasized rote memorization and low levels of cognition, particularly for students with identified exceptional needs. Hear from a group of educators working to change the narrative and increase access to deeper mathematical understanding for all students.

  • Dr. Cathery Yeh will share information about her classroom-based research that challenges traditional beliefs and opens our minds to new possibilities in her keynote titled, “Countering Deficit Myths of Students with Dis/Abilities: Developing Curriculum that Builds on Students’ Mathematical Potential.”

  • Three local educators will give 10-minute Ed Talks about their experiences in OC schools supporting students with mathematical thinking and sense making.

  • A panel discussion will involve all four speakers responding to questions and comments.

Don’t miss out on a great night by teachers for teachers! Registration is FREE and dinner will be provided at no cost.
